Movi 1

abstract

The objective of Movi 1 was to evaluate the impact of a physical activity program on the prevention of childhood obesity in primary school students.

A randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 10 schools in the province of Cuenca, Spain. Five schools were assigned to the intervention group and five to the control group. A total of 1,044 children with an average age of 9.4 years participated. The intervention consisted of an extracurricular program of recreational and non-competitive physical activity based on games, with three 90-minute sessions per week during one school year.

Outcome measures included body mass index (BMI), triceps skinfold thickness, and body fat percentage, as well as blood lipids and blood pressure. Evaluations were performed at the beginning and the end of the program.

The results showed no significant differences in BMI between the groups. However, the students in the intervention group experienced a decrease in triceps skinfold thickness in both boys and girls and a reduction in body fat percentage in girls. Additionally, a decrease in apolipoprotein B levels and an increase in apolipoprotein A-I levels were observed in the boys who participated in MOVI. Regarding blood lipids in girls, the results were similar.

In conclusion, the MOVI program proved to be effective in reducing adiposity and improving some lipid profile variables in primary school students.

In conclusion, the MOVI program proved to be effective in reducing adiposity and improving some lipid profile variables in primary school students.
